Bet Types & Odds

Odds express both potential payout and an implied view of probability, while the bet type defines the condition that must be satisfied. Understanding both is necessary before comparing markets.

Bet Types & Odds

Odds describe price, not certainty

The UK Gambling Commission's 2026 informed-choice glossary defines odds as a number expressing how much a bettor can win if a stated event happens. Higher potential returns generally correspond to lower implied probability, but bookmaker margin means displayed implied probabilities do not necessarily sum to exactly 100%.

Decimal, fractional and American odds

FormatExampleInterpretation
Decimal2.50Total return = stake × 2.50 if the bet wins.
Fractional3/2Profit of 3 units for every 2 units staked, plus stake returned.
American positive+150Profit of 150 on a 100 stake.
American negative-200Stake 200 to win 100 profit.

Worked conversion examples

Decimal 2.00

Implied probability before bookmaker margin: 1 ÷ 2.00 = 50%.

Decimal 4.00

Implied probability before margin: 1 ÷ 4.00 = 25%.

Accumulator

For independent decimal-priced legs, the combined decimal price is the product of the leg prices, subject to operator rules and eligibility.

Common bet types

Moneyline / 1X2

Bet on the stated match outcome. 1X2 explicitly includes draw as a third result.

Totals

Bet whether a defined combined statistic finishes above or below a threshold.

Handicap / spread

A notional advantage or disadvantage is applied before settlement.

Accumulator / parlay

Several selections are combined; all qualifying legs usually need to win, subject to void-leg and settlement rules.

Why settlement rules still outrank a calculator

A mathematically correct odds calculation does not determine whether a market is valid after abandonment, error, non-runner, late bet or other contingency. Published operator rules determine those cases.
